Football Player of Year:
Even though every opponent knew Terrell Newby was going to get the football, no one could stop him.
On seven occasions, Newby carried 27 times or more, and the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder had a monster year with 2,305 yards, averaging 7.7 yards in addition to catching 18 passes and scoring 45 touchdowns to give him 105 for his career - one of the most accomplished running backs in area history, especially for a back from a large school.
Operating out of Chaminade's power-pitch offense, Newby helped the Eagles to a 12-2 record, finishing as the Southern Section Western Division runner-up.
In a 78-34 victory at Harvard-Westlake, Newby rushed for 351 yards and eight touchdowns on 16 carries. The senior had other huge performances: 211 yards and four touchdowns in a loss to Oaks Christian; 233 yards and three touchdowns in a win at Notre Dame; and 176 yards and two touchdowns in a championship loss at Serra.
"Newby is a special guy," Chaminade coach Ed Croson said. "He's a fast guy, a tough guy, and he has a great motor. He's a special player, and even when he doesn't get the ball, you still have to consider him at all times.
"It's pretty common knowledge that when you play Chaminade, you have to account for Terrell Newby. It's not rocket science. He's going to get the ball."
Offensive Player of Year; Corbin Covey, receiver, Camarillo, Sr.
Thriving in Camarillo's shotgun offense, Covey had an eye-popping 143 receptions for 1,347 yards and 12 touchdowns -=- among the most productive in area history for a receiver.
Covey also rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 31.7 yards as a kick returner.
"Corbin has been here three years, and he knows the offense very well," Camarillo coach Dennis Riedmiller said. "Corbin can play a lot of positions - receiver, slot plus we can use him in the backfield. He's one of the best players we've ever had at Camarillo."
Defensive Player of Year: Rick Gamboa, LB, Chaminade, Jr. -
Gamboa had a huge season with 159 tackles, twice recording 20 or more in a game, in addition to seven sacks and an interception.
Gamboa, the Mission League Defensive Player of the Year, was a key defending in helping Chaminade advance to the Western Division final at Serra, where Gamboa had nine tackles and a sack in a 30-28 championship loss.
Gamboa was a dominant player for the second year on a row after posting 113 tackles as a sophomore.
Coach of Year: Robert Garcia, San Fernando
In his first season, Garcia took over a program coming off consecutive three-win seasons and led the Tigers to the City Section Div. II championship with a 42-35 victory over Canoga Park in the final at the Coliseum - San Fernando's first City championship in 37 years.
The Tigers finished third in the Valley Mission League, and no one expected San Fernando to still be around at the end.
"We put it all together even though a lot of people doubted us,"
Garcia said. "But that just motivated us more. We were the No. 5 seed, and everyone said we weren't good enough. I love it."
Game of Year: Serra 30, Chaminade 28, Nov. 30, 2012
In the Southern Section Western Division championship in Gardena, Chaminade came within a whisk of winning a section football championship for the first time in the West Hills school's 60-year history.
Chaminade nearly came back from a nine-point deficit with two minutes remaining, but after scoring on Elijah Dunston's 43-yard reception with 58 seconds left, a controversial call on an onside kick proved to the difference, as TV replays clearly showed Chaminade recovered, yet an official from a questionable angle ruled the football had not traveled the necessary 10 yards.
Chaminade's Terrell Newby rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 2,305 yards and 45 touchdowns for the season.
"It's human error, the human element," Chaminade coach Ed Croson said.
"I didn't think it was even close, but nothing is perfect. The sad part is we played well enough to win."
