Global positioning satellites have been used for some time to gather data and gain an understanding of movements and the natural world. However, there are a myriad of uses for GPS devices and many of those uses are helping people in their personal lives. GPS devices can be used to gain scientific data, to help athletes better understand their performance, to help marketers track their customers and their shopping habits and to recover stolen property. GPS have many benefits associated with them.

Scientific Data

For years scientists have been tracking the migration patterns of animals across several different continents through GPS coordinates. GPS devices or chips are placed on the animal being studied and scientists can remotely track the animal and view data. The information obtained through this method of research has proven to be invaluable. It is helping scientists figure out how animals do what they do, and can even help to protect them from unnecessary danger by better exploring their migration patterns and making human concessions for them.

The Tracking of Persons and Personal Belongings

GPS tracking devices and software can be used to track the movements of merchandise and personal belongings. For example, parents who wish to track the whereabouts of their children can activate the GPS device within the child?s cellular phone. This tactic positions the phone using both global positioning satellites and cellular networks to locate the device and, essentially, the person with the device. This type of tracking is especially helpful for parents who work and have children who walk home from school or activities. The technology can help ascertain where the child is and their movements to and from that location.

The same type of tracking can be employed for a multitude of other reasons, as well. Stolen phones and electronics can be recovered by activating the latent tracking within the device. Some devices come with tracking software preloaded in them, while others will require users interested in the service to pay for and download appropriate software. The tracking of laptops and other devices use bot global positioning satellites, cellular networks and open hotspots to track the location of the device and, potentially, the thief who took it.

Sports and Fitness Data

GPS trackers are heavily used by sport fanatics to track their own movements through different areas. Using a tracker for this purpose helps those interested in their overall progress ascertain a great deal of information without having to personally log anything. The trackers sold specifically for this reason can be activated at the start of a workout and deactivate at the close of the workout. The data collected can help athletes figure out how long their workout was and even the terrain that they moved through. This is especially useful for long distance runners and cyclists who are training for long-distance races. The data collected can yield important information about areas that still need improvement and how much improvement has been made over time by analyzing the data from several sessions over a period of time.

Marketing Data and Strategies

A Brazilian company launched an unusual marketing ploy that used GPS coordinates to reward customers for purchases made. GPS trackers were placed on products and consumers were tracked as they carried on with their day. They were later awarded prizes. While the ploy was the first of its kind it shows a rather unusual and potentially useful form of GPS tracking; although, many questioned whether this type of tracking was ethical. Marketers, however, if given consent, could certainly use GPS tracking device to get a well-informed picture of their consumer?s day-to-day activities.
