Tropical Storm Debby disrupts Gulf oil, gas production

MIAMI (AP) ? Tropical Storm Debby churned over the northern Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, interfering with oil and gas production and putting officials on alert for flooding and strong winds from Texas to Florida.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down Saturday in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported. Heavy squalls pounded parts of the state.

At 2 a.m. EDT Sunday, Debby was about 200 miles (320 kilometers) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph), the Nationial Hurricane Center in Miami said. Debby was moving toward the north at 6 mph (9 kph).

The center of Debby was expected to linger in the Gulf over the next few days with no landfall in the immediate forecast. And while the storm's track remained far from certain, the hurricane center said Debby was forecast to continue a slow northward trek during the day Sunday.

Some strengthening is expected and Debby could be near hurricane force winds by Monday night.

Forecasters warned of up to six inches of rain along the coast, with isolated amounts of 10 inches.

It was the first time four tropical storms have been recorded before July 1 during the Atlantic hurricane season since record keeping began in 1851.

Debby forced the suspension of 8 percent of the region's oil and gas production.

The government reported that nine production platforms and one drilling rig were evacuated. The suspended crude production amounts to about 2 percent of U.S production and about 0.1 percent of global production. The reduced production is not expected to impact oil prices unless the storm strengthens and forces more production platforms to close.

A tropical storm warning was issued for part of the southeast Louisiana coast. Officials there have been monitoring the weather closely for the last several days. Some low-lying areas close to the coast flood easily in rough weather.

"We've already seen higher tides than usual," said Angela Rains, manager of the Terrebonne Levee District.

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

A tornado touched down in Collier County in southwest Florida and forecasters warned other twisters were possible.

Several homes were damaged and tree limbs were down, The Naples Daily News reported.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center said of the twisters. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Out in the Gulf, Anadarko Petroleum removed all non-essential personnel and expects to close four facilities in the central and eastern Gulf by Saturday. Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell and Marathon Oil said non-essential personnel were being removed but production was not being affected. ExxonMobil reported that its operations were unaffected.

Alberto was the first storm this year. It formed off the South Carolina coast on May 19, almost two weeks before the hurricane season officially began June 1.

Tortoise Lonesome George is dead

Lonesome George, a giant tortoise, was believed to be the last of his subspecies

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say Lonesome George, a giant tortoise believed to be the last of its subspecies, has died.

Scientists estimate he was about 100 years old.

Park officials said they would carry out a post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

With no offspring and no known individuals from his subspecies left, Lonesome George became known as the rarest creature in the world.

For decades, environmentalists unsuccessfully tried to get the Pinta Island tortoise to reproduce with females from a similar subspecies on the Galapagos Islands.

Park officials said the tortoise was found dead in his corral by his keeper of 40 years, Fausto Llerena.

While his exact age was not known, Lonesome George was estimated to be about 100, which made him a young adult as the subspecies can live up to an age of 200.

Galapagos icon

Lonesome George was first seen by a Hungarian scientist on the Galapagos island of Pinta in 1972.

Environmentalists had believed his subspecies (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni) had become extinct.

Lonesome George became part of the Galapagos National Park breeding programme.

After 15 years of living with a female tortoise from the nearby Wolf volcano, Lonesome George did mate, but the eggs were infertile.

He also shared his corral with female tortoises from Espanola island, which are genetically closer to him than those from Wolf volcano, but Lonesome George failed to mate with them.

He became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands, which attract some 180,000 visitors a year.

Hunted to extinction

Galapagos National Park officials said that with George's death, the Pinta tortoise subspecies has become extinct.

They said his body would probably be embalmed to conserve him for future generations.

Tortoises were plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction.

Their habitat furthermore suffered when goats were introduced from the mainland.

The differences in appearance between tortoises from different Galapagos islands were among the features which helped the British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution.

Some 20,000 giant tortoises of other subspecies still live on the Galapagos.

Sony, Panasonic tying up in advanced TV displays

Long-time Japanese rivals Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. are working together to develop next-generation TV panels called OLEDs in a reversal of decades of rivalry as they try to catch up with South Korea's Samsung Electronics.

The companies said in a joint statement Monday they will share core technologies to develop OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, panels. They are aiming for low-cost mass production by 2013.

Both Sony and Panasonic have posted big losses after falling behind Samsung Electronics Co. and other Asian rivals in TVs. The joining of forces marks a departure from a long rivalry and highlights the pressure that Japanese manufacturers face to catch-up with Samsung in TVs.

Samsung is planning to start selling TVs with big OLED screens later this year. OLEDs use a different technology from Liquid Crystal Displays and delivers very clear, vivid imagery.

Fitch Ratings said the Sony-Panasonic tie-up underlined "the fall of Japanese tech companies," as such a tie-up was previously "unthinkable."

"Japanese OLED investment is better late than never," said Alvin Lim, Associate Director at Fitch. "While consumer demand for OLED is still unproven, without investment Japanese manufacturers could become stranded in the TV market should this technology become mainstream."

Sony was the first in the world to sell an OLED TV, with its 11-inch model in 2007, but it wasn't a strong seller, partly because of its small size.

Sony buys liquid-crystal displays from other manufacturers. It ended its joint-venture with Samsung to make LCDs earlier this year as panel prices fell and it became more cost-efficient to buy from other makers.

Both Sony and Panasonic reported record losses for the fiscal year ended March 31. They took a battering from plunging prices and a soaring yen, which puts the Japanese at a disadvantage against the Koreans, in price competitiveness.

Analysts say the Japanese could also be hit by Apple Inc.'s foray into TVs that may come in a couple of years. Apple has already eroded the profitability of the Japanese electronics makers with its hit iPod, iPhone and iPad devices.

Why Home Inspection Cost Varies and It's ... - IdeaMarketers.com

Every person, who is planning to buy a new house, will be apprehensive towards his new investment. When it is the matter of buying house, one has to think for home inspection costs. New Jersey is a place where Home Inspection costs are not certain. They fluctuate according to multiple factors. Here, we are going to all of them for the convenience of the buyers.

Home Inspection Costs varies:

Basically, Home Inspection is the first thing buyers should do. Home Inspection costs NJ completely depends on the buyers wish, type of inspection he wants. Usually, this cost starts from $75 and can exceed up to $400. You must be curious to know the reason behind such a huge difference.

Basically, the buyers who could not afford higher costs do not consider Home Inspection a priority. They even go for the cheapest home inspection. Usually, Licensed Home Inspection NJ is very costly and it takes a huge span of time too. These days home inspection cost is getting highly affected because of the vast competition in the market.

Factors behind the cost of home inspection:

Let's have a look at different factors behind the Home Inspection NJ.

  • Time taken for Inspection: The basic reason behind higher cost of inspection is the time taken for the inspection. Lesser the time lesser will be the cost.
  • Licensed or experienced Inspector: If you are approaching a licensed and experienced inspector for Home Inspection then definitely you have to pay a heavier bag of bucks.
  • Geographical location: It has been observed that geographical location also plays an important role in the home inspection prices NJ.
  • Market competition: These days to let down the competitor's business, many inspectors facilitate you with the same amenities at a lower cost.

Why it is important to conduct home inspection?

Next major question is why it is important to conduct home inspection NJ. As we all know for buying a house, one has to take loan of some amount. To slake the bank's expectation, buyer has to go for Home Inspection. This inspection ensures the bank that it is not investing in any bad property. Secondly, a person himself explores some hidden areas of house which he would not be aware previously. In a nutshell, home inspection clears the picture of all the corners of house and endows you with a detailed report for further use.

Impacts of higher costs of Home inspection:

Home inspection costs NJ sometimes goes beyond your wildest dream and becomes difficult to afford for some buyers. Therefore, they skip the inspection part and go for other solutions which could lead them in major troubles.

Conclusion:

Home inspection costs could see higher to some of the buyers, therefore, they should first compare the rates of multiple home inspectors, try to convince them for affordable cost and then finally hire the most compatible person. This process will definitely help you and will enhance your experience of conducting Home inspection in NJ.

Africa's answer to South Park

Copy of ss izikhokho_stills (2) (26375499)

Imagine an SA where its people are under siege from the Swazis and Sothos, and the only ones standing in their way are ?Zulu Boy? and his friend ?Rudolph? ? who just happens to be an alien.

This is the plot of Comedy Central?s new hit, The Izikhokho Show.

The quintessentially South African satirical animation series, and previously only known to YouTube aficionados, is Africa?s answer to legendary South Park, and is set in a surreal and nightmarish universe.

Izikhokho Show is the brainchild of Mdu Comics? founder and cartoonist, Mdu Ntuli.

Among the bizarre and hilarious characters appearing in the hand-drawn cartoon series are: ?Jesus of the ANC? (who visits Zulu Boy in his sleep and tells him that the lord wants him to transfer money on the computer); an unidentifiable creature named ?Bob? who deals with the Mafia and gets intimate with Noleen from 3Talk; not to mention ?Bonang the Camel Toe? and ?Madala? from the Manhood School.

One of Ntuli?s strips is the subject of two complaints to the Human Rights Commission over claims that it pokes fun at Tsonga/Shangaan-speakers.

In Izikhokho Show, Jesus commits suicide because he discovers he is Shangaan. The animation, called Jesus is a Shangaan, has clocked up 108 396 views on YouTube since it was posted last month. Evert Van Der Veer, head of Comedy Central, said this week: ?Izikhokho with its strong graphic look, satirical spin and out-there humour was a great match for our channel.

?Izikhokho?s animation perfectly fits what comedy stands for, it has the power to put issues in perspective, make people think about subjects in another way. Comedy Central is searching for local content, and wants to give local content a stage; not only stand up comedians, but also an artist like Mdu Ntuli.?

Asked whether he expected complaints from sensitive viewers, he said it was unlikely

?The viewers of Comedy Central are mature comedy lovers who are familiar with the concepts and parameters of satirical comedy,? Van Der Veer said.

(AP) ? Authorities ordered more evacuations as fire crews struggled against powerful winds fueling a wildfire that has charred more than 87 square miles of forested mountains in northern Colorado.

The firefighting force has steadily increased and by Sunday night officials said about 1,750 personnel were working on the fire, which was sparked by lightning and was 45 percent contained.

The High Park Fire burning 15 miles west of Fort Collins has destroyed at least 181 homes. The figure represents the most in state history, surpassing the Fourmile Canyon wildfire that destroyed 169 homes near Boulder two years ago.

Julie Berney with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said firefighters dealt with winds of 30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph Sunday. Some rain moved through Saturday evening, but it wasn't enough to quell the fire.

"The problem is that when you have a fire like this, even if it rains it evaporates before it hits the ground," Berney said.

Despite the winds, fire officials said crews Sunday were able to maintain most existing fire lines, with the fire chewing through about 1,000 more acres.

Incident commander Bill Hahnenberg said he was pleased with the firefighters' progress.

"A scenario could be we'll lose some line, and then we just go after it the next day and the next day," he said.

On Sunday afternoon, high winds prompted fire managers to ground all helicopters working on the blaze and to send 96 notices to residents, ordering the immediate evacuation of the Hewlett Gulch Subdivision in the Poudre Canyon area north of the fire. It was unclear how many homes were affected.

Sunday night, Larimer County officials said evacuations orders were also issued for Soldier Canyon and Mill Canyon areas. The officials said 331 notifications were sent.

A high wind warning was in effect all day, and crews are expecting more of the same Monday: winds of 30-50 mph, low humidity and high temperatures.

As firefighters try to get the upper hand on the blaze, which has burned large swaths of private and U.S. Forest Service land, local authorities have dispatched roving patrols to combat looting.

On Sunday, deputies arrested 30-year-old Michael Stillman Maher, of Denver, on charges including theft and impersonating a firefighter. The sheriff's department said Maher was driving through the fire zone with phony firefighter credentials and a stolen government license plate.

His truck was later seen near a bar in Laporte, and investigators say they found a firearm and stolen property in the vehicle.

"There's a handful out there that are taking advantage of others," said Sheriff Justin Smith, adding that "if somebody's sneaking around back there, we're going to find them."

Also Sunday, a fire erupted in the foothills west of Colorado Springs, prompting the evacuation of some cabins and a recreation area near the Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir. U.S. Forest Service spokesman Ralph Bellah told The Gazette (http://bit.ly/MiQvne ) that the fire was reported at about 12:30 p.m. and quickly grew to up to 100 acres.

Meanwhile, a fire near Pagosa Springs in the southwestern part of the state has grown to 11,617 acres and is 30 percent contained. Hot, dry conditions Sunday are expected to fuel the fire, which was sparked by lightning May 13.

Across the West:

? California: Authorities are evacuating homes in eastern San Diego County as firefighters battle a 100-acre wildfire that has destroyed one structure. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the fire began Sunday afternoon in a rural area northeast of Campo and near the Golden Acorn Casino.

?New Mexico: A wildfire in southern New Mexico has destroyed 242 homes and businesses, and firefighters are working to increase containment and keep an eye out for possible lightning.

The 59-square-mile Little Bear Fire in Ruidoso is 60 percent contained. Dan Bastion, a spokesman for crews fighting the fire, says most of the fire is in the mop-up stage, but crews need to build more containment on the fire's active west side to deprive it of fuel.

? Arizona: Firefighters are focusing on protecting electrical transmission lines near a 3,100-acre blaze on the Tonto National Forest in northern Arizona. Officials say hot weather and steep slopes remain a concern, and firefighters are on the alert for thunderstorms and possible lightning strikes. The fire is 15 percent contained.

Prelude to a Catastrophe: "One of the Most Active and Most Explosive Volcanoes in the Cascade Range"

Imagine being an extraterrestrial geologist in geostationary orbit above the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s. You?re the first explorers to reach Earth (underpants-thieving aliens aside), and you haven?t got a lot of data on this little blue marble. But your own planet has plate tectonics, so you?re familiar with the landforms caused by the process.

You have a look through your sensors, and see a conga line of volcanoes weaving up the continent.

Map of the Cascadia Volcanic Arc by NASA. Image courtesy Wikipedia Commons.

Now, your image wouldn?t be labeled, of course. But you can see a trench offshore, and a zig-zaggy ridge, so you can sketch in some very small oceanic plates busily subducting beneath the continent. The line of coastal mountains and that volcanic arc, less than a hundred miles from the sea, would have given the game away even if you didn?t have super-cool sensors that can see beneath the sea. You know there?s an active subduction zone here.

You run further scans. Some of the volcanoes in that arc are fairly young, and have been active in the recent past. You do a quick north-to-south sweep, and notice Mt. Baker still steaming away. Glacier Peak has a 300 year-old coating of ash. Mount Rainier is riddled with hydrothermal anomalies, cooking itself from the inside: it?s so rotten you can see evidence of mudflows barely over a decade old. Mt. Adams doesn?t seem to have erupted for the past few thousand years, but hydrogen sulfide fumaroles puff away atop it. And, a short jog to the south, Mt. Hood has also got active fumaroles. Any of these volcanoes could erupt at any time. The cities you see, located in the shadows of these restless mountains, had better watch out.

But it?s one volcano in particular that?s caught your eye (or eyestalk): just to the west of Mt. Adams, the most symmetrical of the lot. It?s not the tallest, but it?s the youngest. The others are hundreds of thousands, all the way up to a million, years old. Mount St. Helens is a barely-adolescent 40,000. And it?s been extremely active.

Computer-generated vertical view of Mount St. Helens, from photos taken August 5, 1972. Data were filtered by averaging pixel values over areas. Image courtesy USGS.

You zoom in for a closer look. You see evidence of lahars, pyroclastic flows, ash falls, and lava flows. And you notice a dedicated geologist, scrambling over the outcrops. You don a disguise and beam down to chat him up. His name is Dwight ?Rocky? Crandell, and he?s been doing an exhaustive study on Mount St. Helens?s eruptive history. It?s almost complete. And he?s concerned: this young volcano has been quite the firecracker. It?s likely to erupt before the end of this century, he tells you. Being close to population centers, it could cause quite a mess. So it?s important to understand its past behavior in order to assess the risks it poses.

You sit with him for hours, and learn more than you could have possibly hoped. By the end of your discussion, you know this volcano?s history intimately. And you?re intrigued. You can?t help but to be. Dr. Crandell has an infectious passion for geology, and Mount St. Helens is just the kind of volcano that repays that interest in spades.

Mount St. Helens' sunset before 1980. The peak's symmetric cone earned it the title of the "Fuji of North America." USFS photo courtesy of Jim Hughes.

You learn there are two parts to this seemingly single mountain. Dr. Crandell divides it into Old Mount St. Helens, which was built mostly of volcanic domes and short, thick lava flows between 40,000 and 2,500 years ago, and the modern cone that was active as little as a century and a quarter before. He and other geologists, working diligently for many years, have divided her eruptive history into a number of stages and periods. When he?s finished describing them, you have one good English word to describe her: explosive.

You give a pr?cis of what you?ve learned to your team of intrepid explorers when you return to your ship.

First, you tell them, your suspicions of a subduction zone have been confirmed. Earth scientists only recently discovered plate tectonics, but they?ve done an excellent job figuring it out. Just off the coast near Mount St. Helens, a small plate they?ve named the Juan de Fuca is subducting beneath the North American continent. And this has given birth to a very lively chain of volcanoes called the Cascades.

Mount St. Helens was born during the Ape Canyon Eruptive Stage, beginning before 40,000 years ago, and going on until about thirty-six thousand. It was an explosive birth: Dr. Crandell found plenty of pyroclastic flow deposits and a lahar. Ash clouds left blankets of tephra so thick that even tens of thousands of years later, the layers can be recognized ? they?re called tephra set C. Both lithic (pulverized stone) and pumiceous (made of pumice) ash blasted out of the baby volcano. One or more lava domes and flows emerged.

After a noisy introduction to the world, Mount St. Helens fell silent. Then the Cougar Eruptive Stage began about 20,000 years ago, and lasted for around two thousand years. During this episode, she produced plenty of dacite eruptions. Pumiceous pyroclastic flows, the eruption of tephra sets K and M, lahars, and debris avalanches kept things hot. She filled the Lewis River Valley over a hundred meters (over 320 feet) deep ? the deposits might have piled up to 115 meters. A high-silica andesite lava flow joined the excitement. By the time she was done, she?d grown to 1,825 meters (5987 feet). Not bad for a youngster!

She slept for around 5,000 years. The Swift Creek Eruptive Stage, beginning around 13,000 years ago, produced more explosive eruptions. Tephra sets S and J blasted out of the mountain during this time. Lithic and pumiceous pyroclastic flows roared down her slopes and into her valleys. Lahars buried streams in mud and rock. Dacite domes pushed their slow, thick way to the surface. By the end, about 10,000 years ago, fans of rocky debris flanked those domes.

Five and a half thousand years of quiet followed. Then she began her Spirit Lake Eruptive Stage, which is still ongoing. Deposits are abundant enough to begin dividing her antics into periods. And during this time, things changed.

The Spirit Lake Eruptive Stage began with the Smith Creek Eruptive Period, which followed the familiar pattern: energetic eruptions spreading tephra all over the place (tephra set Y in this case). Pyroclastic flows. Lahars. Domes. The only thing really different about this time was the amount of pumiceous tephra she erupted: only the Ape Canyon Eruptive Stage could match it.

Mount St. Helens napped for a brief three hundred years, then woke up 3,600 years ago for her Pine Creek Eruptive Period. This explosive episode produced several pyroclastic flows, tephra set P, and several domes. Dr. Crandell found a remnant of a dome of that age at 2,200 meters (7,217 feet), so she?d attained quite a respectable height. She was still basically a mound of domes and piles of debris. Folks back then might not have been calling her symmetrical.

She took another three hundred year nap before the Castle Creek Eruptive Period, which began 2,200 years ago and marked a change in her style. She mixed it up, starting with dacite eruptions (her old favorite), followed by some andesitic activity that produced ash clouds and a lava flow. After that andesitic interval, she returned to her tried-and-truce dacite style, producing her patented air-fall tephra, pyroclastic flows, and likely a dome. She switched back to andesite for a bit, then really mixed it up with some respectable basalt flows. By the end, she had produced tephra set B, and boasted some very nice lava tubes within her basalts. She?d become a true stratovolcano, attained nearly her full height, and begun to assume her classic symmetrical shape.

?

Silence fell for about six hundred years. Then, around 850 AD, she began her Sugar Bowl Eruptive Period and emitted her first lateral blast while building Sugar Bowl Dome. Dacite blocks up to 30 centimeters (nearly 12 inches) in diameter were hurled as far as 4.5 kilometers (2 miles). Pyroclastic flows and lahars roared down her flanks. She deposited tephra set D, along with a warning: sometimes, she didn?t blow straight up. This brief episode ended within fifty years, but she didn?t stay quiet for long.

In 1480, the Kalama Eruptive Period began with explosive eruptions. In 100 years, she deposited tephra sets W and X, built domes, and released andesitic lava flows that all combined to build her to her pre-1980 shape. All she needed was a few finishing touches.

She put those on during the Goat Rocks Eruptive Period, which lasted from 1800 to 1857. Explosive eruptions of pumice, an andesite lava flow, and the emergence of Goat Rocks Dome, accompanied by hot avalanches and lahars, completed her picture-perfect shape. She also gave a traveling artist something to paint home about.

And that was it, as far as hard-working geologists could determine: a history as complete as erosion and repeated explosive activity would allow. Before you left him, Dr. Crandell had impressed upon you the certainty that Mount St. Helens would erupt again. And you knew from 40,000 years of her habits that she liked going off with a bang. So, while you continued your surveys of Earth, you periodically returned to her, just to check. Other volcanoes erupted around the world, but Mount St. Helens slept on. You began to believe she might not erupt before your survey mission was done.

And then, in mid-March, earthquake counts began to rise. At first, it didn?t seem like much, just a spike in the background tectonic activity one expects in a subduction zone studded with restless volcanoes. But then came March 20th. At 3:47 pm Pacific Standard Time, the earth rumbled and shook with the force of a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. It was just a smidge to the northwest of the summit. It was very, very shallow. And it wasn?t like anything seismologists (or we imaginary extraterrestrials) had ever seen round her before.

Geologists and seismologists looked at that earthquake trace, and knew: this could be it.

HP dvd550s

The once-standard internal optical drive has been on the wane with the increased proliferation of ever-smaller tablets, ultrabooks, and smartphones. But don't toss out your discs just yet: External optical drives have been dutifully filling the void and becoming the only means of reading and burning discs for many users. The HP dvd550s ($69.99 direct) is a solid solution for those who want to read and burn DVDs or CDs, offering write speeds ranging from 5X for DVD-RAM to 8X for DVD?RW to 24X for CD?RW. In addition to an affordable price tag, its super-slim form factor means it can unobtrusively fit into your laptop bag or backpack.

Design and Features
The dvd550s is practically the size of a jewel case, measuring 0.65 by 5.5 by 5 inches (HWD). It weighs a scant 7.2 ounces, so you can take it on the go without breaking a sweat. Unlike the Pioneer BDR-XD04 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars), it sports a tray-loading design, so it's meant for horizontal use. Although its small size ensures an inconspicuous appearance, the dvd550s is attractively designed, so it won't cramp your ultrabook's style. The main housing is gray matte-finished plastic that's complemented by a glossy-finished top with the HP logo on the upper right side.

At the rear of the drive, there's a single micro USB port. Because the dvd550s is powered by the included USB Y cable, no AC adapter is needed. More power-intensive operations like burning DVDs, however, require both USB plugs, so you'll need two free USB ports. My only gripe: Although the included Y cable is a generous 35 inches long, the shorter strand measures only 14 inches. This can be a minor annoyance when you need both USB plugs; a more evenly distributed cable would have been optimal.

The HP dvd550s comes with a complimentary copy of CyberLink Media Suite 8 DVD, which includes Power2Go (for data disc creation), PowerBackup (a PC backup utility), MediaShow (for viewing and organizing photos and videos), and trial versions of PowerDirector (for editing and authoring DVDs) as well as PowerDVD 11 (video playback). Despite a somewhat clunky interface, the software is relatively intuitive and easy to use. The software suite nicely doubles as an apt metaphor for the dvd550s: It does the job quietly and in a frills-free fashion.

A caveat for MacBook Air users: The HP dvd550s is only compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7), so unless your system has Boot Camp or a comparable multi-boot utility, you should steer clear of this drive and go with the Editors' Choice-winning Samsung SE-506AB External Slim Blu-ray Re-Writer ($149.99 direct, 4 stars)?it's compatible with both Windows and Mac.

Performance
During testing, the dvd550s emitted minimal noise beyond the whisper of spinning discs (four tiny rubber feet on the drive's underside help absorb some of the accompanying vibrations). It also stayed cool to the touch; its temperature, as measured with a Fluke IR thermometer, never exceeded 84 degrees Fahrenheit during DVD playback. Even when I used the dvd550s to install the included software, it never ran hotter than 90.5 degrees. Using the dvd550s was simple, and I encountered no discernible hiccups when reading and writing DVDs or CDs with Power2Go.

Ultimately, the HP dvd550s is a basic what-you-see-is-what-you-get external optical drive. It's not Blu-ray compatible like the Pioneer BRD-XD04 and it doesn't feature AV connectivity like the Samsung SE-506AB External Slim Blu-ray Re-Writer; and unlike the Samsung Optical SmartHub SE-208BW ($129.99 street, 2 stars), it doesn't sport any remote access features. And there's nothing wrong with this. The HP dvds550s does what it's supposed to do, and at an affordable price. If you're just in the market for an easy and inexpensive way to read or write DVDs or CDs, then the HP dvd550s is a fine, straightforward choice.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the HP dvd550s with several other dvd burners side by side.

Should Michigan Adopt This Law To Protect Pets? ? 99.5 WYCD ...

Priscilla, Elvis & "Miracle"

Priscilla, Elvis & ?Miracle?

New Jersey drivers who fail to buckle up their cat or dog could face criminal charges as well as fines totaling up to $1,000. State officials are teaming up with the NJ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to enforce laws requiring motorists to properly restrain their pets. The law forbids dogs from hanging out windows ? and also from riding in the bed of a pickup truck. Drivers who fail to do so could face fines from $250 to $1,000 ? for each offense. I personally think Michigan should definitely adopt this law to help protect our 4-legged friends!

I know not everyone will agree with me, and some people think that pets are not as important as people. I just hope that the people who think that way, do not own a pet themselves. I feel sorry for dogs and cats that are treated like ?possessions? and not given the same love, care and respect that we give our human loved ones.

The New Jersey lawmakers added that pet owners who fail to protect their pets while traveling in vehicles, could also be charged with disorderly conduct under New Jersey?s animal cruelty statutes. I think that will add legal incentive to comply with this pet protection law! My 3 dogs travel have always traveled with us, in a car seat that is buckled in for their safety and my peace of mind! They also wear life jackets when traveling in our boat!

Do you think Michigan should adopt this law to protect our four-legged friends in motor vehicles?

It looks like another long celebrity breakup is finally winding down. Two years after their split in 2010, Gossip Girl?s Kelly Rutherford and ex-husband Daniel Giersch have set a court date for July 12 in order to finalize their divorce. E! Online?reports that the major issue of this trial is custody of their two children. Though the two had previously decided on joint custody, Rutherford later issued a restraining order against Giersch after claiming he threatened her nanny and affected her parenting.

What are some ways to solve relationship issues out of court?

Cupid?s Advice:

Even the best relationships have their occasional problems. The difference between successful relationships and unsuccessful ones is how these issues are handled. Before spending time, money and energy to find solutions in court, consider the following tips:

1. Talk to your partner: Communication is the simplest way to solve relationship problems. If you talk to your partner and address your issues early on, they won?t grow ?into the sort of major disputes that need to be handled in court. Plus, building openness in your relationship will help prevent new problems from developing.

2. Go to counseling: Before taking legal action, consider talking to a marriage counselor or going to couples therapy. Getting an expert?s opinion can give you the answers you need to bring the romance back. Even better, it can give you a sense of where your relationship should be headed.

3. Bring in a third party: ?If you?re unwilling to take your relationship to counseling, try starting by talking to a close friend. Find a person who?s willing to listen and consider both sides of your issues and have them help you find a solution. Even if you can?t come up with an answer, you?ll feel better knowing your problems have been shared.

Daily Chronicle | Donations breathe life into pets

Inside a cage at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter last week, a tired-looking black labradoodle with a small burn mark on his nose wagged his tail when he saw his owner, Jonathan Johnson.

Proto almost didn?t survive a fire May 24 in Johnson?s downtown Sycamore apartment; two cats and a turtle died. But Proto and other cats were revived with pet oxygen masks, which were donated to the Sycamore Fire Department.

?I?m just glad that the fire department had them,? Johnson said. ?Those masks are probably what saved [the animals].?

The masks were donated by Terry Delcore, a DeKalb resident and cat owner who saw an ad on TV for pet oxygen masks and was inspired to donate the kits to local fire departments in the past couple of years. Kits include small, medium and large oxygen masks designed especially for pets.

?It makes me feel good to know that something I donated really works,? she said.

The Sycamore Fire Department has pet oxygen masks on each engine and ambulance, said Assistant Chief Marc Doty. They?re not used often, but they play an important role when they are needed.

When Sycamore Fire Lt. Paul Rubeck entered the apartment above the Sycamore Moose Lodge in the 300 block of West State Street, he found plenty of smoke and Proto in a pet cage. Johnson and his fiancee, Peipei Lu, were not home.

Rubeck couldn?t see the dog until he was about four inches from his face. Proto wasn?t breathing, so Rubeck carried the dog out of the apartment and laid him on a cool spot on the ground.

?That was about the end of him,? Rubeck said.

But after Rubeck put the pet oxygen mask over Proto?s mouth and nose and pressed on the dog?s chest for about five minutes, Proto began to breathe and gasp for air.

Two other dogs, Auto and Chewy, and two cats, Lego and Diesel, made it safely out of the apartment. The animals were turned over to DeKalb County Animal Control and treated at a local veterinary clinic. Firefighters used the masks on two other cats, but the attempts were not successful.

With the temperature in the apartment and the amount of smoke, Rubeck said the animals that survived wouldn?t have lasted much longer.

?I really didn?t know if that dog was going to make it,? Rubeck said. ?That oxygen mask saved him. It really did.?

Delcore has donated the pet oxygen masks to DeKalb, Cortland, Genoa-Kingston, Malta and Sycamore fire departments. Each department also was given a pet first-aid kit. Additionally, Delcore said she?s given masks to DeKalb police.

?I?m an animal lover all the way around,? Delcore said.

The pet masks are necessary because it?s not healthy for firefighters to use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on an animal. DeKalb Interim Fire Chief Eric Hicks said the mask is more of a cone shape, so it fits better over the snout of a pet.

Delcore said she wanted to ensure local fire departments had enough masks in case of an emergency. She?s happy to see them used to save any animal?s life.

?They?re basically helpless because the animals are inhaling smoke just as humans are,? she said. ?... It?s something that was needed and no one thinks about.?

Hicks said DeKalb fire has had to use the kits twice in 2012, including a May fire in Tilton Park in which several pets were at a house that caught fire.

Unlike humans, pets usually cannot easily escape from a burning structure and can become overcome by the smoke, Hicks said.

Bruce Kozlowski, chief of the Genoa-Kingston Fire Protection District, said the same oxygen used for humans is used for pets. The district has not had to use the masks thus far.

?We like having them,? he said. ?With as many pets that we have in our area, if we have had to use them, it?s good to have.?

Although he?s grateful for Delcore?s donation and the pets that were saved, Johnson and Lu are missing those that didn?t make it.

?It?s really hard not to have them all,? he said. ?The animals are our kids.?

? Daily Chronicle managing editor Kate Schott contributed to this report.

Corning promises flexible displays with its new Willow Glass technology

Willow Glass

Corning today introduced its newest display technology, a thin and flexible surface its calling "Willow Glass." The glass maker says that its latest design will support thinner backplates and color filters for OLED and LED technologies, but most importantly it will be flexible, enabling curved displays for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Corning, the makers of the popular and durable Gorilla Glass, is using a fusion process to shrink the thickness of its glass down to that of a sheet of paper, which also translates to high performance under high temperatures. What does all the gibberish mean? Well, for Android, it means more options for phone displays, and more curved screens à la what we've seen most recently on the Galaxy Nexus. While phones that mold to the shape of your hand are probably still a way's away, Corning is making sure that its glass is ready for evolving technologies. The full presser can be found after the break.

Will Internet Marketing Work For Your Business? ? My Perspective

This is an extremely difficult question to answer because there are so many complex factors involved. Specifically they techniques you employ in your Internet marketing campaign as well as the execution of these techniques can determine whether or not Internet marketing will work for your business. Additionally, the likelihood of your target audience using the Internet and responding to your marketing efforts should also be considered into the equation. This article will outline the potential for success in an Internet marketing campaign.

Before making the decision to embark on an Internet marketing campaign campaign you should carefully consider your target audience. The Internet is used widely around the world but whether or not members of your target audience are likely to utilize the Internet to research or purchase the products or services you sell is not guaranteed. This is significant because investing a great deal of time, effort and money into Internet marketing when your target audience is not likely to respond to these efforts is not worthwhile.

Conducting market research can do a great deal to help you determine whether or not you should invest in an Internet marketing campaign for your business. This step is very important because it will give you a good indication of whether or not you should even begin marketing your business on the Internet. Hiring a firm specializing in market research is recommended because they can conduct this research quickly and efficiently and will likely gain a great deal of valuable information as a result of their research efforts. If they determine your business can benefit from an Internet marketing campaign, it is time to start thinking about how you want to advertise your business online.

Again, seeking the help of professionals can be an extremely worthwhile investment. If you are not well versed in the industry of Internet marketing, hiring a firm with a great deal of expertise in this industry can be very helpful. They can assist you by consulting with you to determine which marketing strategies will be most effective, designing advertisements for your campaign, helping you to orchestrate your Internet marketing campaign and evaluating the results of marketing efforts to determine which strategies are working and which are not.

The potential for success with an Internet marketing campaign is virtually limitless. The success you enjoy is only limited by your ability to promote your products and services and execute effective marketing strategies. Some of the marketing strategies you may wish to employ may include optimizing your website for relevant search terms, placing links to your website judiciously on the Internet, writing and publishing e-newsletters and utilizing affiliates to promote your website.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important aspects of any Internet marketing campaign. SEO is so important because it dictates the ranking of your website on popular search engines. Internet users value these results and are not likely to seek out websites which do not rank well with search engines. Conversely, high ranking websites can enjoy a great deal of increased website traffic as a result of these rankings.

Inbound links to your website are also important in Internet marketing. Inbound links are links on other websites which direct users to your website. These links are important in an Internet marketing campaign. First of all many search engines factor inbound links into their ranking algorithms which means inbound links can result in higher search engines rankings. Also, these links can be used directly by website users to access your website. This means you can gain traffic directly from these links.

Another way to enjoy a successful Internet marketing campaign is to orchestrate an affiliate marketing campaign. Affiliates are essentially website owners who place a banner ad on their website to direct traffic to your website. Typically, affiliates are only compensated when the advertisement on their website produces a desired effect such as enticing the users to click through the advertisement, resulting in a sale or resulting in another action such as filling out a survey or registering with your website. Affiliate marketing can not only be highly effective but it is also cost effective because you only pay the affiliates when they produce results.
